A tumor suppressor gene, or antioncogene, is a gene that protects a cell from one step on the path to cancer. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tumor_suppressor_gene)
It's absense can lead to Cancer (see also Oncogene)
If a pair of tumor suppressor genes are either lost from a cell or inactivated by mutation, their functional absense might allow cancer to develop.
