판 운동의 원동력은 지구과학자들 사이의 집중적인 토론 주제이다. 가장 근접한 설명은 해양지각의 상대적으로 높은 밀도 때문이라는 것. 연약권을 뚫고 삽입대 안으로 들어간다고.
