특정 영역만 선택적으로 DNA sequencing한다. PCR primer로 선발하는 과정을 포함하므로, Targeted amplicon sequencing (TAS)이라고도 한다.

이를 도와주는 키트를 panel이라고 한다.

유전변이를 정확히 정량하고자 할 때, 특정 영역만 선발하고, 증폭시키는 과정에서 PCR amplification bias와 artifact, 누적되는 시퀀싱 오류로 정확도가 낮아지게 된다. 이를 보완하기 위해 amplification 전에 특정 tag (MT or UMI, Unique molecular index)를 미리 붙혀서 UMI만 카운팅하는 방식인 Digital sequencing 방식도 활용된다.
